A common question in advertising and marketing today is What exactly are video brochures? If you’re reading this, chances are you’re either in one of two groups. You’ve never heard of them, or you’ve heard of them and maybe even seen one.
The Details Of Video Brochures
Video brochures are highly effective in advertising and marketing. They capitalize on the effectiveness of videos by getting them into the hands of targeted prospects. In case you’ve experienced the challenge of having a fantastic video while struggling to get the right people to watch it, Video brochures are the number one way to overcome that challenge.
Structurally, they’re hand assembled, card based products with LCD screens housed inside of them. For storing video content, they have an onboard sound chip and USB memory. To activate the video, all a user has to do is open it – similar to how motion detectors turn on lights whenever people walk by them.
Regarding screen sizes, they can range from 3 inches, 4 inches, 4.5 inches, 5 inches, 7 inches, and 10.1 inches. More than anything, the determining factor when choosing a screen size should be the size of the entire unit. This is because while many studies have been done in an effort to identify which screen size performs the best, we’ve yet to find any data that suggests a bigger screen size produces a higher return on investment. Instead, what matters most is the visual appearance of the entire piece.
With regards to how video brochures play video content, there are a few different ways. They either autoplay when opened, which is the most common, or there is a button that can be pushed.
Also, for buttons, we’ve included up to fourteen in a unit for one customer. However, our policy is that we allow up to 6 buttons without an extra charge. The most common buttons are Play/Pause, Fast Forward, Rewind, Volume Up, Volume Down, Video (multiple videos can be included, each activated by its own button), Skip Forward 15 Seconds, and Skip Back 15 Seconds.
Furthermore, while design templates exist and are easy to follow, none are considered standard. In many cases, custom design is more dynamic and popular. As well, sizes of units vary from business card size on up. Just like with screen sizes, no data has proven that bigger sizes of video brochures produce better results. Here are examples:
Regarding the outer finish, again, there are several options. They range from matte to gloss, or SoftTouch finish. They can also come with soft cover or hard cover card stock, similar to hard cover books. As well, they can have design elements such as foil, spot UV, embossing, debossing, and die cut slots for holding business cards or other promotional and informational materials. We can also offer folder pockets as well as custom die line covers.
With respect to memory, there are several size options available. Screen size and video length are the biggest determining factors when choosing between them. The most common are 128MB and 256MB, which are plenty big for the needs of most users. However, other options are 512MB, 1G and 2G, which are necessary for some users.
Regarding what types of files video brochures will support, we prefer MP4 or .MOV formats. They produce better output with resolution that looks more crisp and clear on a video screen. With that said, other file types that will work are JPEG and PNG for users who want motionless text and/or images to appear on the video screen.
And finally, regarding batteries, a standard battery for a video brochure will last for approximately 80 minutes of continuous play. Just like cell phones, they’re super easy to recharge with a USB cord.

Having owned an advertising magazine in Utah, I’ve worked in marketing for over twenty years.
I started writing for MediaFast in 2014. The first time I held one of their video brochures, I thought something like, “Wow! This blows away our magazine and any other print advertising I’ve ever seen. This is like a TV commercial, and I’m holding it in my hands. Amazing!”
Since then, video brochures, video mailers and video boxes have become leaders in marketing performance. It’s a privilege to write about them. I also love MediaFast—with its top-notch product quality, industry leading customer service, and all of the wonderful people I get to work with.
